India is officially known as the Republic of India (Bharat). It is located in southern Asia and has an area of 1,222,243 sq. mi. (including the portion of Jammu and Kashmir administered by India). It's capital is New Delhi.

India is the second most populous country in the world. It had a population of over 900 million in 1995. It's largest city, Bombay, had a population of more than 9 million in 1991. Other cities, like Ahmadabad and Bangalore (which are major rail junctions), Calcutta, Delhi, Hyderabad (which is noted for it's handicrafts), Kanpur (which is known for manufacturing leather), Madras, Poona, Nagpur, Lucknow and Jaipur, have populations of over 1 million.

There are six major religions practiced in India. Approximately 83 percent of the Indians population are Hindus, 11 percent are Sikhs, 0.7 percent are Buddhists, and 0.5 percent Jains.

India is a coalition of 32 states and is divided into three geographical regions.

Northern and Eastern India include the states of Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and Assam.

Central Indian includes Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, part of Andhra Pradesh, and Orissa.

Southern India includes the states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

The Indian people have diverse racial and cultural origins from the various races and cultures that passed through the subcontinent.

As a consequence, there are over 1600 languages or dialects spoken in India.

Although Hindi is considered the official national language of India, English is accepted as a second language.

Moreover, the Indian constitution recognizes 26 other state languages used in education and commerce. Some of these are Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kashmiri, Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi, Sindhi, Urdu, Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada (Kanarese), and Malayalam.

When you travel through India, you will notice that as you go further south, the food becomes spicier and/ or hotter. Here, at the India Palace, we serve food from the Northern region of India.
